How Much Would You Pay For A VA?

April 2, 2011 by admin
It’s vital to the successfulness of your VA business that you know the PC programs you use and be highly practiced in the abilities you are providing. Being fast at the keyboard also assists you to take on more business and earn more.

It also pays to be a quite fast typist, if other aides are finishing the same sorts of roles in 1/2 of the time you are charging your customers, you will soon lose business. You’ll need to provide your small office with the things you would usually find in an office.

Most PC programs have advanced features that not only make absolutely sure aspects of the program easier, they are also utilised by the ones that hire you. [Read more...]

Virtual Gaming and its appeal

Online Casino table

Based on no official research or study I think that the virtual gaming community is dominated by men – particularly the war and fantasy based games while again in purely my inexpert judgement community forums tend to be populated more by women with the exception of some sport based virtual communities.

Virtual worlds like Second life are more appealing to women as well I think because they offer a social development aspect and a chance to be a part of a community, albeit a virtual one.

I used to be quite pleased with myself years ago when my Sims characters started to generate a life of their own and my virtual Sim world started to grow and develop. [Read more...]

Living in a Virtual World

February 28, 2011 by admin

The Virtual World construct has been explored in a number of films from the Matrix to Avatar and many more. In most of these films the step into living in a virtual world is taken further and rather than experiencing the virtual world through the connection of a computer the films have explored the possibility of ‘plugging in’ your consciousness directly into a virtual environment. The line between what is real and what is being experienced in your mind is the interesting grey area explored in the complex story lines. One of the main debates within the films is the power of individuality and difference whilst recognising what is real. [Read more...]

Virtual Worlds and Social Values

February 25, 2011 by admin

Virtual worlds operate their own social values – most are aimed at the over 16s and those designed specifically for the under 16s do their best to insure that no adults are a part of the community to prevent any improper relationships being formed. More and more people are spending a significant amount of their time living in virtual worlds with their virtual friends building a virtual community. In the non war based virtual communities it seems that success and commerce brings rewards for the residents and contentment levels are high and virtual crime, low. Is it therefore a virtual utopia? Possibly but what happens in your real life when your focus is living in a virtual one? [Read more...]

Virtual Worlds and their Environments

Flight Simulator cockpit

Virtual worlds and simulated environments provide a valuable way of offering an experience without the risk of doing the same in the real world. Simulators have been used for many years and obvious examples are flight simulators to familiarise pilots with elements of the flight experience without the risk of flying an actual plane.

It can be used to assess aptitude prior to full training being provided and allow the potential pilots to learn and ‘crash’ which you clearly wouldn’t want to do in real life. [Read more...]

Forums and Chat Rooms

February 3, 2011 by admin

For many, virtual worlds and communities are an important part of their lives and exist in online forums and chat rooms. A forum is a site for members, which is solely based on the conversations of those members in the form of ‘threads’. Some forums are linked to sites which tend to appeal to a particular interest group; moneysavingexpert.co.uk has a forum with numerous threads which all have a money saving bias. Forums probably span the whole gamut of interests (some more mainstream than others).

One of the popular areas for forum discussions is parenting, from trying to conceive through every stage of pregnancy to birth stories and each following stage of development. Most internet savvy mums or mums to be will have consulted an internet sites like babycentre.co.uk or netmums.co.uk and may well have joined the forums to ask for advice or to offer opinion on the latest pram, baby fashion dilemma or child health and welfare.

Forums can offer valuable support and if you are lucky you can find real friends that can go beyond the screen name and avatar. It’s not surprising that strong bonds are forged when most dedicated forum users are on line everyday ‘talking’ to the same people about every aspect of parenting. The community aspect really comes into its own when one of the members goes through a challenging time. In my forum life I have virtually ‘held hands’ with numerous friends going through very difficult times and have received support in return. It is very strange how involved you can become in the lives of a group of strangers that on the whole you haven’t met. I have been delighted to hear when someone struggling to conceive finally gets a positive test result or when someone going through chemo gets an all clear. However it is not all good news and there are people struggling through very difficult times.

There is a wealth of information available from the thousands of people in virtual communities, if you don’t know something or want advice or information why go to Google when there are hundreds of people who probably know the answer already and whose opinion you grow to trust. Obviously there is a balance because there also seem to be some who use the forums and their forum ‘friends’ as some kind of replacement for real life friends and also rely on the forum to guide every decision from what should I have for dinner to what should I name my baby.

Virtual Communities

Virtual Communities

Virtual Communities

‘The world is your oyster’ well the virtual world that is. All you need is a decent internet connection and you can go anywhere and do anything you could possibly imagine. There are online communities dedicated to living in virtual worlds and your virtual neighbours might be from Croydon, California or Colombo. The concept of creating online virtual communities and worlds isn’t new but they have become increasingly sophisticated with all the nuances of everyday society reflected in a virtual one.

You invent your online personal – your avatar (hence the film title) and can begin a whole new life. Virtual world games can be played with the computer simulating the environment or you can join a gaming community already occupying a virtual world. There seems to be two main streams of virtual world games; those that replicate the real world and the fantasy worlds which have developed from the roll play communities of the 70’s and 80’s. Your avatar may acquire special powers and magical abilities the further you progress in the game.

Virtual communities are thriving and this is probably down to a number of reasons but one of the best (although also possibly the worst) is that anyone can enter a virtual world and pretend to be anyone else. A lonely 40 year old man might take the role of a young hero or even a princess. Who’s to say your buxom 20 something virtual neighbour isn’t actually a grandmother from Stoke on Trent?

There are some virtual arenas which are designed to appeal to a younger audience where there are levels of regulation to try and ensure that adults aren’t posing as children. Internet security and guidance should apply to all though as sometimes the borders between virtual and real worlds cross. No one should arrange to meet someone they have only met online without taking some precautions like meeting in a public place, make sure other real life people know who and where you are meeting etc.

Are virtual worlds one day going to supplant living in the real world? For some they already do to a large extent but there are lots of positive aspects of experiencing virtual worlds including educational aspects and opportunities for those limited by money or physical or mental issues to ‘see’ things which they simply wouldn’t be able to do in ‘real life’.
