What to consider when planning your gaming room

November 23, 2011 by admin

So you’ve got the go ahead to transform your garage / spare room / bedroom into a gaming zone. How do you do it? Apart from the obvious – change the décor and get new furniture including a cosy gaming chair I didn’t realise the consideration when it came to noise and how I could ramp up the volume on my new surround sound system but keep the neighbours happy. That’s when I stumbled on the plethora of information available about windows and doors which I thought I’d share:

As the name suggests, double glazing consists of two panes of glass with a gap between them – this gap creates the barrier that prevents heat loss (or gain). The gaps between the panes are sometimes filled with inert gas such as xenon and argon.

Double glazing comes in such a myriad of materials and styles it is well to consider the differences and their relative impact – both on efficiency and design- before you make a final choice.  Double glazed doors and windows will differ in their energy efficiency, how much sunlight is allowed to pass and the amount of leakage of air around the window of frames. Dealing With Three Betting Out of Position

November 15, 2011 by admin

Playing out of position in poker is akin to playing all of your league soccer matches away from home. However, unless you plan on folding all of your hands, you need to learn to play poker in this manner, so here are some helpful tips. In each of these examples the pot is a three-bet pot.

You raise and get a three bet from a player holding position on you and you decide to call. You then decide to play fit or fold poker, meaning you are check folding almost everything that is not hitting your hand. If you play three-bets pots out of position like this, your opponents will murder you.

You could decide that tight is right. You realise that you are playing out of position and so you fold everything but your strongest hands. This is not a bad approach but again, a good opponent will notice this and although you may get money off the fish, the good players will see through this strategy.

The best way is to be balanced.  You need to be able to four-bet with your value hands and your bluffs. You need to be able to call with your medium-strength hands and your value hands. In short, it is all player dependant and your choice of style depends on the opponent you are facing. For example, although an unbalanced fit or fold style of poker is a poor choice, it may be sufficient enough against a passive-weak fish that cannot lay a hand down.

How to stop chasing chips

September 28, 2011 by admin

The best way to stop yourself chasing back your chips from the middle with a bet that is probably one too far, because you have a strong feeling that you are in second place, is to consider that any chips that go into the pot are no longer yours.

We have all made the mistake in past of hanging around in a hand longer than we should have. Some players will call it ‘pot committed’, but ultimately there is no such thing. Every bet you make should be independent and you need to take consideration to the odds you are getting for your bet. The probability of winning will change after each round and you need to make decisions accordingly, especially in Betfair poker tournaments.

Bets that are ma [Read more...]

Learn from losing

August 24, 2011 by admin

Nobody likes losing at poker, regardless of the stakes you play and the level you play at. However, losing is critical to your development in the game, as long as you learn from where you went wrong.

You learn very little from winning at internet poker. It is great when everything goes well, but in terms of improving, you only really learn from making mistakes at the table. When you win a poker tournament, you will have made a few errors along the way but on this occasion they were not enough to stop you winning. Therefore, you are very unlikely to analyse your game afterwards and highlight what exactly you did wrong.

One thing you will learn about poker is that a method that is correct on one day may not work in another session. There is no definite way to play the game and different styles can have equal amounts of success.

In the early stages of your poker career, you should be encouraged to take risks and not worry overly about making a mistake. No matter how silly these mistakes are, they leave you with an emotional feeling that you can remember and transfer into future games so that you never make the same mistake again. This way you can maximise your online poker bonus.

It would be naive to think that you can eradicate mistakes completely from your game even as you become more and more experienced; it simply is not the case. If the best players in the world did not make mistakes, they would be almost impossible to beat. The nature of the game sets us all up for making errors no matter how good we think we are. What we aim to do is limit them as much as possible and not to keep making the same mistake over again.

Calling a short-stack all in

August 18, 2011 by admin

When most players get down to short stack, they look to go all-in at the next best opportunity. It can be an advantage to call such a bet because your opponent has been forced to go all-in due to their chip stack and not because of the quality of their hand.

For example, if the player is dealt a pair of sixes, they may not feel that a better hand will come along, so they will push in with the low pair. A pair of sixes will be less than a coin flip from holding up against a player who has two different higher cards. If it wasn’t for the short stack, the initial player may never have even entered flop with such hand. Watch out for this happening at Betfair Poker LIVE Dublin.

There will be occasions where more than one player will make the call. To avoid this, you can re-raise the initial bet to detract other players joining the pot. This will allow you to isolate the vulnerable player who has been forced to go all-in. You must be careful of doing this if you have little confidence in your hand standing up if it came down to the showdown. When playing poker online you don’t want to commit too many chips if you are unsure of your hand.

If more than one player calls the all-in bet, it has been known for them to check right down to the showdown in the hope of teaming up and eliminating the player on short stack. Most players don’t like this tactic, though, because they feel like they are missing out on an opportunity to make more chips from the hand. If a player feels they have the best hand at the table, they would want to introduce more chips to make it even more profitable.
